back to > Washington Franklin Table

The Washington - Franklin Definitive issues from 1908-1922 utilize only these two basic stamp designs - George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, yet they account for almost 200 different perforation, watermark and paper varieties.

Steps to Correctly Identify these Issues
  1. Determine the Perforation Type - Imperforate, Coil or Regular Perforations
  2. Measure the Perforations using a perforation gauge
  3. Does it have a Watermark? Double-Line, Single-Line or none
  4. Type of Printing Press used
Examples: Cat #
Perf 12, single line watermark, 1c Washington #405
Perf 8 ½, vertical coil, 1c Franklin #392
Perf 10, single line watermark, 2c Washington #425
Perf 10, no watermark, 5c Washington #466
Perf 11, no watermark, Flat Plate, 1c Washington #498
