Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park encompasses 814 square miles and is one of the largest protected areas in the eastern United States. The park was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and was certified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
