#792 - 3¢ Faragut & Porter

3¢ Navy
This stamp honors two American Civil War Naval officers. David Farragut went down in history when, on August 5, 1864, he won the Battle of Mobile Bay. When warned that the Bay was heavily mined Farragut issued his famous order, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" David Porter, Farragut's adoptive brother, won fame in the War of 1812 as commander of the USS Essex. Porter would later be court-martialed and serve as the commander-in-chief of the Mexican Navy.
