FARLEY'S FOLLIES
Postmaster General James A. Farley, a close friend of Franklin D. Roosevelt, knew the President's passion for stamp collecting. When a new stamp was printed Farley would often pay and remove several full sheets from the presses, before they were perforated or gummed, to present to the President, friends and family. In February 1935, a month after a Congressional inquiry accused Farley of favoritism and a scandalous misuse of power, he defused the controversy by announcing that the 20 issues in question would be made available to the public.
