The son of a Dutch engineer and a black Surinamese slave, Jan Matzeliger went on to revolutionize shoe production. Matzeliger's shoe-lasting machine, patented in 1883, more than tripled shoe production speed, significantly lowered shoe costs, and made shoes widely available to the public.
