#4384 - 42¢ Civil Rights - sheet of 6

The 12 men and women honored here by the US Postal Service were each responsible for key events that helped to found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). For more than a century, the NAACP has worked “to promote equality of right and to eradicate caste or race prejudice among the citizens on the United States.” Those featured include Mary Church Terrell and Daisy Gatson Bates, both of whom were responsible for desegregation movements, Charles Hamilton Houston, a lawyer involved in Supreme Court Civil Rights cases, and Mary White Ovington, co-founder of the NAACP.
