Dr. Jonas Salk (1914-1995) discovered and developed the first polio vaccine, saving generations of children from the crippling disease. With no interest in personal profit, Salk spent a decade developing the vaccine and campaigned for mandatory vaccination. His last years were spent searching for a vaccine against HIV.
