William Clark (1770-1838) was an explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor who helped lead the Lewis and Clark Expedition across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean. As a reward for his leadership, Thomas Jefferson appointed Clark the U.S. agent for Indian affairs, and in 1813 he was appointed governor of the Missouri Territory. He was later appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs, where he maintained peaceful relations with tribes and oversaw the relocation of eastern tribes from their ancestral homelands to lands west of the Mississippi.
