#4748- (46¢) Modern Art - Sheet of 12

American artists traveling to Europe were exposed to several different styles of abstract painting. Using what they learned, they returned to America and created a style of art all their own, giving rise to the age of American Modernism. Initial critics, including President Theodore Roosevelt, were extremely displeased with this strange new genre, declining to acknowledge it as art. Despite unfavorable reviews, the expressive style grew in popularity, giving rise to artists such as Charles DeMuth, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Gerald Murphy. The reverse side of this commemorative sheet lists details about both the individual paintings and their respective artists. Scott 4748 Modern Art
