Ukraine Famine Relief - 1923 Complete Mint Set of 4

In December 1922 Ukraine became one of the four founding republics of the Soviet Union that all utilized the same Soviet postage stamps and currency. Interestingly the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic issued this set of four that was sold for three weeks in June 1923 in just a few Ukrainian cities to raise funds for Ukrainian Famine Relief. The designs feature allegorical images of famine relief and a portrait of Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet who was an outspoken critic of social and national oppression. (Ukraine #B1-4)
