Charles Lindbergh - The Lone Eagle

Save 33% on this 1977 Cacheted First Day Cover

On the morning of May 20, 1927, a 25-year-old airmail pilot named Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field on Long Island in a small single-engine plane loaded with 450 gallons of fuel and no radio or navigation gear, to attempt what no one had been able to accomplish: to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic. 33 and a half hours later this unknown young man reached Le Bourget Field in Paris and instantly became an international celebrity. Returning home, Lindbergh claimed the $25,000 Orteig Prize as the first to accomplish this daring feat.

In 1977 the U.S. Post Office commemorated the 50th anniversary of this milestone with a commemorate stamp showing his plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" during those lonely hours flying low over the Atlantic. The attractive engraved cachet shows "Lucky Lindy" and his plane, so named because his flight was financed by two businessmen from St. Louis, and is postmarked at Roosevelt Field, the same location where Lindbergh began his trip exactly 50 years earlier. Order today and save $1 off our regular price! (US #1710)
