#2870 - 29¢ Recalled Legends - Error Sheet of 20

A short time before the scheduled release of this striking commemorative sheet in March 1994, it was discovered that Ben Pickett was erroneously pictured in place of the legendary Bill Pickett, the first African-American cowboy to be inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame. The Post Office Department hastily withdrew all sheets from circulation, but 183 had already been sold before the official first day of issue - some of which later brought up to $15,000! To diffuse the uproar, a lottery sale of 150,000 sheets was announced for single orders postmarked on October 1, 1994. The small quantities sold through the lottery coupled with high collector and investor demand have made this an incredible rarity. Scott 2870 Recalled Legends Error

#3209 - 98 1¢ - $2 Trans-Mississippi Set - sheet of 9

It took 100 years for post office to re-issue these classic 1898 Trans-Mississippi designs in their intended colors!  Due to cost and time constraints attributed to the Spanish-American War the government chose to print this 1898 commemorative set using one color per stamp.  To celebrate their centennial in 1998 the post office utilized the original 1898 engraved printing dies to print all 9 values - from 1¢ to $2 in their intended two color format - on a special commemorative sheet.
