1939 Newfoundland Royal Visit - #249-251 1939 Mint NH Set of 3

On June 17, 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth concluded a month-long visit to Canada with a stop in Newfoundland, which issued this 5-cent stamp on the day of their visit.

By November, the post office had run out of 2-cent and 4-cent stamps, and since Britain declared war on Germany in September, they were unable to obtain new supplies of stamps from their printers in London in time to meet the shortage, so remaining stocks of the Royal Visit stamp were surcharged locally with new values. These quickly sold out after 3 weeks!

Add this 3-stamp set to your collection commemorating the only visit King George VI made to North America! (Newfoundland #249-51)
