1857-1861 First Perforated Stamps #18-39
Before 1857, U.S. stamps were printed without perforations. Then England’s Henry Archer invented a machine that punched holes between stamps so they could be easily separated. The U.S. Post Office released all 23 stamps of the series of 1857-61 (#18-39) in perforated form.
