To replace the short-lived 1869 pictorials, the Post Office Department returned to traditional portraits featuring prominent Americans. Stamps of this era are known as "Bank Note" issues because the National, Continental and American Bank Note Companies - renowned for printing high-quality currency - were contracted to produce them.
