$5 Statue of Freedom - Save $3 On This Engraved Mint Isssue

The traditional art of engraving returned to U.S. stamps with this bold 2018 issue picturing the Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol. Installed in 1863 on the new Capitol dome, President Lincoln ordered work to continue during the Civil War to show the nation that in his words "the Union shall go on".
Ironically, it was Confederate President Jefferson Davis, while he was the U.S. Secretary of War in 1854, who proposed the idea of the statue! Another interesting fact was the casting and installation was overseen by Philip Reed, a master craftsman and former slave who had just been emancipated.
This was also the first engraved U.S. stamp to feature optically variable ink the denomination number changes from a glittery gold to green when the stamp is tilted. (US #5297)
