In the 1970s a dynamic culture and art movement arose from the African American and African Caribbean neighborhoods in the Bronx, New York City. The term hip-hop often refers to just the music but is also includes other related activities that developed at the same time: rapping, DJing, break dancing, and graffiti art. Before hip-hop music was heard on radio in 1979, teenagers developed hip-hop for neighborhood fun, storytelling, and to address pressing social issues. Hip-hop has evolved over the years to become a global phenomenon with artists from across the world contributing to the genre and telling their own stories. These four stamps honor the hip-hop phenomenon that began over 40 years ago. The spirited music, dance, and art movement has greatly influenced American and global popular culture ever since.
