US #657 Sullivan Expedition FDC - 1929 FDC - Save 30%

From June to October 1779, Major General John Sullivan, acting under orders from George Washington, led 4,000 Continental Army troops from Pennsylvania into upstate New York in response to attacks on American settlements by British Loyalists and allied Iroquois forces. The campaign drove Loyalists toward the Canadian border and opened the region to American settlement.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Sullivan Expedition, the U.S. issued this stamp on June 17, 1929, with first day ceremonies held in towns along the expedition’s route. At a time when such events were rare, this issue stands among the earliest U.S. stamps to have first day ceremonies outside Washington, DC. Add this historic first day cover, issued 97 years ago, to your collection today and save 30% off our regular price. (US #657 FDC)
