#2389 - 25¢ Lincoln Ellsworth

The son of a wealthy coal man who also dabbled in arctic exploration, Lincoln Ellsworth was an early American explorer. In 1926, Ellsworth accompanied Roald Amundsen on his second effort to fly over the North Pole. On May 12 of that year, the Geographic North Pole was sighted. Although Richard Byrd claimed to have reached the pole earlier, this was the first undisputed sighting of the area. For his extraordinary efforts, Ellsworth was made an Honorary Boy Scout, a rarely awarded title. Scott 2389 Lincoln Ellsworth
