#2408 - 25¢ Washington - booklet single
The steamboat Washington made its maiden voyage on June 3, 1816. The Washington embodied important innovations in design and equipment. The improvements were lessons-learned by designer Henry M. Shreve while he was working onboard the steamboat Enterprise. The Washington's engine was almost Horizontal and was connected directly with the paddle wheel through a pitman -- a design that was standard on all future vessels for nearly a century.
