#2635 - 29¢ Alaska Highway

Completed in 1942 the Alaska Highway is 1,387 miles long as of 2012. It was not opened to the public until 1948 due to safety concerns and the addition of guardrails and permanent steel bridges. Even still, the road was notoriously dangerous, with large sections remaining unpaved until the early 1980s. Despite the highway system in Alaska, it currently has the highest number of pilots per capita as many places in the state are only accessible by small planes. Scott 2635
