One of the oldest military awards still given today, the Purple Heart is awarded to those courageous men and women who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty while serving with the U.S. Military. Originally known as the Badge of Military Merit and awarded by General George Washington himself, the medal was phased out of use until after World War I.
