Richard Allen (1760–1831) was a minister, educator, writer, and one of most active and influential black leaders in the United States. In 1794, he founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the first independent Black denomination in the United States. Along with his wife they also ran a station on the Underground Railroad for enslaved people fleeing from the south. Scott 5056 Richard Allen
