#5688S - George Morrison - Set of 5

George Morrison (1919–2000) was an Ojibwe landscape painter and sculptor from Minnesota. He was part of the individualist modern art movement of artists who wanted to distinguish themselves from contemporary movements or their backgrounds. He is well known for wood collage sculptures and for the landscape paintings he preferred. Much of his artwork is based on an eye-catching horizon line that may have been based on his experience of growing up near Lake Superior as a child. Indicating the space where sky and water converge, the horizon line also signifies the border between the known and unknown. The stamps in this set feature five of his famous abstract landscapes: Sun and River (1949), Phenomena Against Crimson: Lake Superior Landscape (1985), Lake Superior Landscape (1981), Spirit Path, New Day, Red Rock Variation: Lake Superior Landscape (1985), and Untitled (1995).
