James Monroe was elected as our 5th President winning over 80% of the popular vote. During his two terms in office from 1817-1825 Monroe purchased Florida from Spain, and with the Treaty of 1818 the U.S. was extended from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. Monroe fought in the American Revolution and served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. In 1803 Monroe's national prominence emerged when he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase from France.
