Edward MacDowell was a European-trained American composer. His compositions, which included "Indian Suite" and "Woodland Sketches", were distinctly American and earned him directorship of the music department at Columbia University. However, his attempts to introduce European methods to American music instruction were met with resistance. He retired to his farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 1904. Scott 882 E. MacDowell
