Horace Mann is honored as the father of American public education. Mann reformed the existing public schools in Massachusetts after witnessing the inadequate facilities and instruction. Mann convinced others that public schools should be funded through public taxes, not charitable donations. Mann was later elected to Congress and served as president of Antioch College in Ohio.
