#CS9 - "Ten" cent Davis - milky blue, soft paper

One of the scarcest Confederate States stamps, this first version of the 10-cent Jefferson Davis profile features the denomination spelled out as "TEN". It is said that Varina Davis, wife of the president, objected to the design because Davis looked too much like Lincoln, but it is more likely that its brief life, available for just a few weeks, was because the design was engraved on a copper plate which wore quickly.
