On January 18, 1940, the icebreaker Joseph Stalin freed the crew of the icebreaker Georgi Sedov, which was trapped in polar ice north of Greenland for an astonishing 812 days. During their time stranded in the ice, the brave crew converted the ship into a scientific station and conducted numerous experiments.
