Established by Americans as a homeland for freed slaves, Liberia was the first African nation to proclaim its independence and is Africa's oldest modern republic. One of Africa's busiest ports, much of Liberia's early economy came from shipping. The figure on this rouletted stamp, the world's first triangular stamp to picture a map, represents commerce.
