Marsh Is.#307 Fall of Corregidor - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue

May 6, 1942 With broken heart and head bowed in sadness but not in shame I report ... that today I must arrange terms for the surrender of the fortified islands of Manila Bay ... With profound regret and with continued pride in my gallant troops, I go to meet the Japanese commander.” Following these brave and honorable words to President Roosevelt and General MacArthur, General Jonathan Wainwright met with Japanese General Masahura Homma to discuss terms of surrender. Homma demanded the complete surrender of all the Allied troops on all the Philippine Islands. During the futile negotiations the Japanese had overtaken General Wainwright’s command post in the Malinta Tunnel, along with 11,000 Allied soldiers. Fearing a massive slaughter, Wainwright accepted all of General Homma’s terms, including complete surrender of all forces. The captured Allied soldiers on Corregidor were subjected to the same harsh treatment as the P.O.W.s at Bataan.
