Marsh Is.#317 Sevastopol Falls to Germans - 1992 Imperforate Mint Issue
July 3, 1942 Hitler’s quest to capture Moscow and cripple Russia had been brought to a halt by fierce Russian resistance and the brutal, unforgiving winter weather. He soon formulated a new plan to attack southern Russia and capture vital oil fields in Baku, hydroelectric dams along the Donets River and the fertile Kuban region. By mid-May, the port city of Sevastopol was the last Russian foothold on the Crimean peninsula. Heavily fortified, and home base for the Russian Black Sea fleet, the navy could protect the city by maneuvering up and down the coast and shelling the Germans as they approached. This defensive strategy managed to keep the enemy at bay for several months. Unfortunately, the city’s supplies began to run out. The Germans’ relentless bombing and shelling eventually leveled Sevastopol. On July 3, the defenders surrendered.
