Pirate Treasure! - 17th Century Silver Coin Discovered in Rhode Island

Henry “Long Ben” Every was called the “King of Pirates” for slyly avoiding capture and making off with a fortune in looted treasure. In his most famous raid, in 1695 he chased down and attacked a convoy sailing from Yemen to India and plundered money and jewels valued at $100 million in today’s dollars. The first worldwide manhunt ensued, but he was never found and most of his crew ended up in the New World. A hoard of silver coins was recently discovered in Rhode Island and this silver abbasi from the Safavid Dynasty, today’s Iran, is believed to be from Every’s looted treasure.
