Over 25,000 were killed and up to 130,000 were injured on December 7, 1988 when this earthquake hit Armenia, a republic in the Soviet Union at that time. Despite the tensions of the Cold War, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev formally asked the United States and other countries for humanitarian help.
