Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky has been called the greatest Russian composer of all time. Catching the attention of Czar Alexander while a civil servant, he enrolled in the Saint Petersburg Conservatory where he soon became Russia's first full-time composer. His works including the 1812 Overture, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker are among the most widely-performed pieces of classical music today. This set of 5 stamps issued for the 100th anniversary of his birth also pictures his home in Klin which is now a museum. Russia #789-93
