# 39 - 90¢ Washington - blue

Issued in 1860, the 90¢ stamp had only a brief time in circulation before the outbreak of the Civil War led the Federal government to demonetize the entire 1857 Issue. Northern post offices returned their remaining stocks for destruction, while supplies in the South were often lost, mishandled, or destroyed during the conflict. Given its short lifespan and the turmoil of the era, it’s remarkable that any examples of the scarce 90¢ Blue—U.S. #39 featuring George Washington—have survived.
