# 294 - 1¢ Fast Lake Navigation

The 1¢ Pan-American commemorative stamp features the steamship “The City of Alpena,” which plied the waters of the Great Lakes.  In those days, the steamers carried bulk loads of cargo -- wheat from the Midwest, ore to be processed and coal for fuel.  Despite the short season for shipping on the lakes, thousands of steamships were built in the quest to carry their loads faster and more efficiently.  A sidewheeler, the City of Alpena carried not only cargo on her route between Detroit and Mackinac Island, but had sumptuous berths for passengers as well.  Scott 294 1¢ Fast Lake Navigation
