#688 - 2¢ Braddock's Field

Braddock's Field, near Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania, was the site of a 1755 battle of British forces attempting to free the Northwestern Territory from French occupation during the French and Indian War. This stamp pictures the statue of George Washington erected on the battlefield. Washington was the senior American aide to British General Edward Braddock during this ill-fated battle which mortally wounded Braddock and forced the British and American forces to retreat. The 23 year old Washington was rewarded for his heroism with a promotion to Commander of the Virginia Regiment. Scott 688 2¢ Braddock's Field
