A war hero, Zachary Taylor was the first President never to have previously held elected office. Taylor, himself a slaveholder, opposed the spread of slavery into new territories and encouraged California and New Mexico to apply directly for statehood as free states. Taylor died only 16 months after assuming office and was succeeded by Millard Fillmore. Scott 817 Zachary Taylor
