Deployed from the space shuttle Discovery in April 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope is the largest and most complex astronomical observatory ever placed in orbit. Positioned 380 miles above the earth and outside the distortion of the atmosphere, it has recorded detailed images of distant astronomical objects and its observations have provided major clues to the mysteries of our universe.
