Samuel Morse's developed his system for rapid long distance communication following a tragic occurrence where it took him many days to hear of his wife's death. Under direction of the Post Office Department of the United States, Morse opened the first public telegraph office in the United States on April 1, 1845. From the Chamber of the U.S. Supreme Court, Morse tapped out, "What Hath God Wrought?" Scott 924 Telegraph
