#1193 - 4¢ Project Mercury Plate Block

On February 20, 1962, a 40 year old test pilot named John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard his Mercury Friendship 7 spacecraft. From blastoff to splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean five hours later, millions of Americans were captivated by his historic, 3-orbit flight. This stamp was prepared in secrecy after hours and sent to post offices in sealed packages marked "Top Secret", not to be opened until ordered to do so, which came upon the successful completion of the mission late in the afternoon of February 20.
