Edgar Bergen was a self-taught ventriloquist who is best known for his routine with the wooden dummy, Charlie McCarthy. Although not the most technically proficient ventriloquist, Bergen is remembered for crafting hilarious characters and comic dynamics. The dummy McCarthy was a fast and aggressive wit who thought little of insulting another person; typically Bergen would try to keep McCarthy in line, but with little success.
