The ubiquitous star of the silent film era, Charlie Chaplin was also an accomplished musician and composed the scores to many of his films. Many of his characters were inspired by French pierrots, or sad silent clowns. His miming and slapstick style translated easily to laughs on screen at a time when films did not have recorded sound.
