#3509 - 34¢ Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter best known for her self-portraits. She was stricken by polio as a child, and at the age of 18 the bus she was riding collided with a trolley, causing serious injuries that haunted her physically and mentally for the rest of her life. To pass the time during her convalescence, she took up painting, and had a special easel made that allowed her to paint in bed while lying down. Of her more than 140 paintings, 55 were self-portraits, and when asked why she said "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best". Scott 3509 Frida Kahlo
