The Lake Michigan Sand Dunes are the largest freshwater dune system in the world, spanning 275,000 acres, with only 70,000 acres listed as a protected habitat.. Migratory birds, endangered plants, and rare insects make their homes here, some of which can be found in no other region in all of North America.
