#4525 - (44¢) Helen Hayes

Known as “The First Lady of American Theater,” Helen Hayes (1900-1993) is praised as one of the greatest actresses of the 20th century. Throughout her 80 year career, she is one of only 15 people to have won an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards), and was also awarded America’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Her most memorable role was as the Queen of England in the play Victoria Regina, in which the Queen of Sprain reportedly applauded Hayes’ ability to perfectly capture the mannerisms of her grandmother. In addition to her extensive acting career, Hayes spent a considerable amount of time and money working on philanthropic projects, most notably the Helen Hayes Hospital, of which she was most proud.
