Indiana was the 19th state admitted to the United States in 1816. Indiana means “Land of the Indians” and the state was largely possessed by native tribes even after it was granted statehood. Indiana is also known as the Crossroads of America due to its location in the middle of the country and the many interstate roads that cross the state.
