Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), the iconic American artist of the pop art movement, astonished the art world in 1961 with his large paintings featuring cartoon characters and a range of consumer goods, among other unusual subjects. Some art connoisseurs found them outrageous, but others saw great meaning in them and his career quickly took off.
