Tomie DePaola (1934-2020) was an American writer and illustrator of more than 260 children's books. His books covered a wide range of topics that included folklore, informational books, religious and holiday stories, and autobiographical tales. Slyly simple, his stories have emotional warmth that attracts readers of all ages. In 2011 he received the biennial Children's Literature Legacy Award from the U.S. children's librarians.
